Neighborhood Play Day in Cimarron Hills!
On Saturday, June 21st, Teena Ortega and husband KC had their neighbors over for a friendly cornhole tournament. Teena put paper invites into her neighbors mailboxes and extended the invitation to her whole street with the goal of meeting new people and helping others form new connections. She knew if she could get 20 people to commit to a Neighborhood Gathering then Hey Neighbor would provide the cornhole equipment (thanks to a partnership with Underline) and support for running the tournament.
Teena is a recent graduate of Neighborhood University and has hosted a Neighborhood Cafe with Hey Neighbor. She has also just become a Neighborhood Leader and is a champion of connection in her Cimarron Hills area. She whole-heartedly believes in the power of connection at the local level and wants her neighborhood to be more connected with each other. She has a special interest in preventing loneliness and is using the skills she picked up at Neighborhood University to make a real difference, one person at a time.
It was a gorgeous day to play outside and many of those who showed up had never played the game before. Teena set a table of BBQ pulled pork and sides for the lunch break, and a neighbor brought a cooler of cold drinks to beat the summer heat. Competition was fun and intense, and the winners went home with gift cards and supplies to keep the neighborhood gatherings going. There was a blanket of gratitude for the delicious company, snacks, and opportunity to gather and talk about happenings on the street and ways to continue to grow relationships. There was brainstorming about a neighborhood yard sale and potential block party. It's so exciting to see where the conversations and actions sparked by this gathering are going!
