Connecting Community through Cornhole

On Saturday, October 18th, Old Farm resident Ashley Kushner gathered her neighbors for a cornhole tournament, and much, much more!

Ashley had heard that Hey Neighbor could provide support and equipment for neighborhood gatherings, so she contacted her Community Coordinator, Heather Briggs, for more information. Over coffee, they talked about how Ashley has a passion for bringing community together and had a big vision for a community play day at the park.

Armed with the Hey Neighbor Cornhole Tournament Tool Kit and some amazing hosting skills, Ashley distributed invitations, put up signs, booked food trucks, and organized additional activities for the lunch time get together. She reserved several sets of cornhole boards and organized neighbors to bring face painting, kid’s games, prizes, and sidewalk chalk.

The weather turned out to be gorgeous and lots of folks came out for the fun. There were between 50 and 75 people present, enjoying coffee from the Xtreme Coffee Roasters food truck and watching kids run around and be creative. Cornhole is easy to learn, and many joined a team for some lighthearted competition. There were several new neighbors who had just moved to the area and appreciated the opportunity to make new friends.

Ashley really exemplified what it means to be a neighborhood leader, so welcoming and inviting to all who walked up, and the day revealed how many neighbors are hungry right now for fun connection and joyful gatherings.
