Hey Neighbor Team Meets Civil Rights Icon Delores Huerta
An unforgettable moment with civil rights icon Delores Huerta
The Hey Neighbor team had the honor of attending An Evening with Dolores Huerta at Pikes Peak State College. At 95 years young, Dolores remains one of the most influential civil rights leaders of our time, and hearing directly from her was deeply inspiring for our entire team.
Dolores co-founded the United Farm Workers with César Chávez and helped lead the historic Delano grape strike, shifting labor rights and protections in the United States. Her advocacy has always extended beyond farmworkers. She has been a powerful voice for environmental justice, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, voter registration, and broad community empowerment. Her work has shaped movements that continue to grow today, and she has done it all with determination, clarity, and an unshakeable belief in the power of everyday people to create change.
Hearing her speak reminded us that strong, connected communities do not happen by accident. They are built by neighbors who show up for each other and commit to doing the slow, steady work of improving the world around them. Dolores has lived this commitment every single day for nearly a century. Her message was energizing, hopeful, and very real. She encouraged us to stay engaged, to listen to our communities, and to remember that movement building begins with relationships.
Our team left the event feeling motivated and re-grounded in why we do what we do. Dolores’ legacy reinforces our belief that when neighbors come together, they have the power to build vibrant and connected communities. We are grateful for the chance to learn from her and to carry her spirit of “sí, se puede” forward in our work.
