Neighbor Spotlight: Meet Chuck Whalan!

We’re excited to continue our Nominate a Neighbor series with another spotlight on someone who truly walks the walks the walk of being a good neighbor: Chuck Whalen!

At Westmore Park in Pleasant Valley, Hey Neighbor’s Community Coordinator Marilyn Dawson sat down with longtime resident Chuck Whalen, a neighbor who was nominated anonymously for always going above and beyond. Chuck is known for his daily walks, where he stops to greet people, check in, and share updates about neighborhood events and the Pleasant Valley Neighborhood Association.

For Chuck, community is about joy. He believes neighbors get involved when things are fun, welcoming, and easy to join. While membership in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood association dropped after COVID, Chuck and his neighbors have been rebuilding. With an annual membership of just $25, they host concerts, rallies, car shows, and family-friendly events that bring people of all ages together.

Chuck’s approach is simple: Whether it’s a potluck, a bubbles station for kids, or a concert in the park, each small gathering builds momentum and strengthens connections. “You’re only as strong as the people you build up around you,” he says. “Community is about developing others and working together.”

At Hey Neighbor, we couldn’t agree more. Just like Chuck, we believe that neighbors who reach out, listen, and invite others in are the ones who make their neighborhoods thrive. Chuck is proof that even a walk through the neighborhood can spark connection and help build the kind of community where everyone feels they belong.
