On September 28th, 2025, Hey Neighbor hosted the State of the Neighborhoods Community Luncheon, an afternoon filled with gratitude, inspiration, and celebration of the people and partnerships that make Colorado Springs neighborhoods thrive. The event brought together neighbors, community leaders, and local partners to honor those who are helping to create more connected, vibrant communities across the city. Mayor Yemi also presented his proclamation declaring September 28th as National Good Neighbor Day!

This year’s luncheon highlighted the Hillside neighborhood, recognizing the community for its exceptional efforts to build relationships and strengthen neighborhood pride. The Hillside story has become a model of collaboration and creativity, supported by local partners including Kangaroo Coffee, Graffi-t’s, Food to Power, the Hillside Community Center, and SUP Colorado Springs, all of whom were recognized during the event.

One of the afternoon’s most moving moments came when Mayor Yemi Mobolade presented his Spirit of Colorado Springs Award to longtime Hillside resident June Waller, honoring her decades of leadership, compassion, and commitment to her community. The crowd rose to their feet in applause as June accepted the award, surrounded by members of the Hillside Advisory Team who helped make sure she was present and celebrated.

Guests enjoyed a delicious meal provided by Picnic Basket Catering, who generously donated their time and service. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and laughter, as neighbors shared stories and new connections were made across tables.

“Neighborhoods are the heart of Colorado Springs,” said Kelly Bull, Executive Director of Hey Neighbor. “This luncheon was about celebrating good neighbors, inspiring one another with creative ways to connect, and reminding ourselves that when we strengthen our neighborhoods, we strengthen our whole city.”

The event was made possible through the support of generous sponsors, including Colorado Springs School, Underline, and The Colorado Trust, along with the hospitality of Josh Gainey and the Hillside Community Center, whose space helped bring the vision to life. Photographer Allison Daniell beautifully captured the neighborly essence of the day in photos that reflected joy, connection, and community pride.

The State of the Neighborhoods Community Luncheon reminded everyone in attendance that when neighbors come together, they create something powerful—hope, belonging, and a stronger Colorado Springs.
